Re: [asianamericanromance] More Thailand Troubles

Some might be afraid to come to Thailand because of this, but only if they are not researching Thailand enough

Tourism is and tourists are very wecome there (I think from people on both sides of this issue)

What do you think about Thaksin?  Is he a socialist giving away the rich peoples money?

Margaret Thatcher said "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people money to spend

I hear Thaksin like to hand out the goodies...

Thailand: tourists warned to be on guard over Pro-Thaksin protests in Bangkok

By Tim Clark
Last updated at 10:55 AM on 12th March 2010
Tourists in Bangkok are being warned to be extra vigilant this as thousands of protesters hit the city's streets today in the first of a weekend of street protests against the Thai government.
Approximately 4,000 protesters began early demonstrations in the capital while 30,000 more have begun their journey into the city from the rural heart of the country for the main rally on Sunday.
Tourist sites have been declared no-go areas for foreigners in the wake of the action - which is thought to be the biggest since the riots in April 2009.

The Thai government has drafted in more than 30,000 security personal with 46,000 'civilian defense volunteers' on standby.

Supporters of ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who was deposed in a 2006 coup, have called for a 'million man march' to begin nationwide on Friday and converge in the capital on Sunday, where they plan to possibly remain for several days.

Thai policemen watch as a young supporter of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra waves a flag during a gathering at a checkpoint in Ayutthaya province.

On Tuesday, the Thai government invoked its Internal Security Act, a law that gives the military special powers to restore order if necessary. It cited intelligence reports about plans to instigate violence at the rallies.
In a news conference attended by police, military and city officials government spokesman, Panitan Wattanayagorn said: "We have confidence that we can manage to get through this situation peacefully.
"But due to the large number of demonstrators planning to come we have concerns."
Tourists and foreigners are not targets of the protesters, who are calling for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to resign and pave the way for fresh elections.

Popular tourist attractions the Grand Palace and backpacker street Khao San Road are 'areas of concern' because of their proximity to the main protest site, said Bangkok Metropolitan Authority spokesman Thanom Onkeppol.
Claire Taylor, Operations Manager at tour company Explore who has previously led expeditions to Thailand said: "We have a couple of tour groups in Bangkok at the time of the demonstrations, so we have moved their hotels to ones situated on the other side of the river, well away from the areas affected.
"Other groups arriving in Bangkok around the time of the demonstrations are being taken direct from the airport to other areas of the country to start their tours – such as Ayattaya, about two hours away.
"Demonstrations in Thailand have been ongoing for many years – however I don't believe that they are getting more regular, just more widely reported."
Protesters plan to gather at an open field near the Grand Palace, and spread around the area. Tourists should avoid the areas "if at all possible".
Panitan added: "Some two dozen foreign embassies have issued advisories, including the United States which urged Americans to stay away from the protests where "violence cannot be ruled out".
Protest leaders from the pro-Thaksin movement, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatoriship have repeatedly said they will gather peacefully and accuse the government of hyping security concerns to make them look bad.
Authorities fear a repeat of April 2009 when tens of thousands of Thaksin supporters paralyzed major Bangkok intersections and sparked violence that killed two and injured more than 120 people.
Thailand has been gripped by a political crisis and sometimes violent protests since 2006, when Thaksin was ousted for alleged corruption and abuse of power.
In 2008, when a pro-Thaksin administration was in power, anti-Thaksin activists seized Bangkok's two airports and stranded thousands of tourists.
Bangkok's international Suvarnabhumi Airport has a contingency plan in case of emergency, an airport statement said on Wednesday.
International passengers are advised to get to the airport three to four hours before their flights depart.

So I curious.

What made you choose the woman that you did over all of the others that you wrote to?

Did you ever meet in person the other girls you wrote to?

Good question, Khwan.

Fate?

The hand of God?

Deux ex machine?

Who knows what any of all the Odd Gods of the Universe have in store for us.

Id our future truly in our own hands?

I had, for a long while, this desire to visit Thailand.

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a God in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the God's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

As before: I had given up on dating life as we know it and hate it in North America.

I paid to get these catalogues and saw this one photo of a smiling lady and wrote.

Actually; I sent my 1st letter (just photocopied) to maybe 30 gals.

The ladies from the Philippines; without a doubt: every one of them

sooner or later wanted money, help or changed their story significantly.

Single virgins mysteriously just happened to have 3 and 4-year-old kids.

Their birthdays would change and they would need a Gucchi watch.

Or; cash was much easier to send, if you don't mind.

Anyways: I digress:

After writing to my (now) wife for about 6 months:

I had some vacation time & hopped a plane (was living in Hawai'i by that time).

Part of me wanted to see if it was all for real or just some kind of deal where a kind

of assembly line of (who knows) men and/or women were just writing letters to unsuspecting fools like maybe me.

And then: Bangkok! Whoooooooooooo Eeeeeeeeeee! Yikes!

I'll let your imaginations run wild, my little listeners.

Not too wild, now: keep it in the Restricted ratings; don't be going off into XXX land.

So; from a hotel in BBK; I called her up.

We met at what we thought was the airport, but; made the same mistake and ended up at the same place anyways.

Great minds think alike, right?

Or: fools seldom differ.

Either way (again: the hand of God?); we met.

I was truly impressed with her family and their closeness.

Entirely disparate from what I had come to expect from my family.

I made up my mind right there and then to become a part of that family; do whatever it took.

I did have other gals (a couple) on a list to see. But; never did.

While taking me around the local interesting spots we went to see this old famous monk in the countryside.

He somehow thought we were married already or somehow our souls were already joined and so he blessed us as man & wife.

Gee; we had just met (no sex yet, my listeners), yet this old monk somehow discerned that our paths were designed to be one.

Pretty freaky stuff; I'll tell ya.

Anyways; that's the short version of how we met.

So: just like that.

I had to escape from the USA and back to Canada (I'm Canadian) to sponsor her.

That took almost 3 years.

At the age of 42; getting married for the 1st time, having a wife and a steady

home to be at (I had travelled the world (Venezuela, Columbia, Greece, Turkey,

France, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, had been way up past the Arctic Circle,

Switzerland, Holland, Belgium………….like that) with my work so hotel

rooms were more common and having a permanent place to come to

and someone to come home to was a big change.

The hardest part/thing was sharing the financial decisions and the opening of mail.

Yeesh; I just kinda freaked out about that.

Now; we look back and laugh.

My life cup is not ½ empty; neither is it ½ full: it overflows.

This, too, can happen to you.

Jerry
