Look around on the internet.  There are other jobs beside being a teacher.  Most are temporary but they give you a feel for the landscape and may provide opportunity for extended stays.

Before going in this or any other capacity, spend at least year of study with the language.  It is available at most community colleges.

My daughter who is somewhat proficient at conversation acquired a job as a waitress on a paddle boat on Lake Biwa.  The whole boat was done up like a Mississippi River gambling boat.  The majority of employees dressed in cowboy attire.  That was in the early 90s.  She had a blast.

well im 24 and id love to be able to possibly work as maybe an english instructor over there.. problem is i dont have a degree.. my english is very good just no college. maybe you could help? if not we cna still be friends.. ive always been interested in japan.. asia in general but japan more specificaslly. . also love anime.
