So we should all name the boys;
John, Bob, Ed, Greg or Gary.
Girls would be named:
Anne, Betty, Alice, Donna or Mary.
What a world it would be.
No Sharon’s, No Rose’s, No Cath’s.
Arnaldo: for sure you’d be in a bin someplace or maybe a John?
What a boring world with no diversity.
Of course “David” Figlio can make comments like this because he has a “normal name”.
The test was done in England that has some weird caste system and a greater disparity between the haves and have-nots.
The Lords and the “common people”.
North America & particularly Canada have a more diverse cultural content and are more accepting of all things different.
As a matter of fact; perhaps too much emphasis is put on being “different”, but; anyway everyone is very accepting and
even proud of accepting many differences (although I’m having difficulties with tattoos and body piercings).
But; I digress.
The kids at my boys’ school have some truly different names.
There are Philippine, East Indian, Afrikaans, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Hmoung, Iranian and a whack of other nationalities in their school; a great
mixture, so; the kids names are a kaleidoscopic hue of vowels and consonants!
My boys are not any different in that aspect.
We named them:
The eldest:
Asanee (Thai for “Lightning”), Show (Japanese for “to fly high quickly) Stone (to keep him grounded because the other two names keep him aloft).
The youngest:
Atid (Thai for “Sun in the Sky), Ryu (Japanese for dragon spirit) River (to keep him flowing smoothly and cool because the other two names are “hot” names).
They are both proud of the origins of their names and everyone in the school (of 600) know who they are, in part, because of their unique names.
And; surprisingly: they embody the spirit of their names, too: the older one with lofty ideas & ideals; the younger with a free spirit and a hot temper.
Their Thai and Japanese names had to be O.K.-ed at the respective temples; a lot of thought and trips to the monks with birthdates, etc.
Their grades do not suffer and they are quite popular (especially with the girls; we see this: it’s almost embarrassing) and are leaders amongst the boys.
So: I would disagree with Figlio’s ideas or maybe his ideas only work in England.
I don’t think the rest of the world is so regimented.
